BitLocker Book in Spanish

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

As it could not be less, once again we are surprised by the Perez Reverte of our IT world, on this occasion the great Xavier Genestós presents us with a new book, another essential to have if we work with the world of Microsoft, on this occasion a BitLocker book piece, To encrypt!

What I said, Another book that will be part of the great collection of Books for Sysadmins that he has been publishing. This book, like all the previous ones, is written in Spanish and designed so that we can make the most of it and implement everything that is explained in the company. This time it deals with a very specific topic and throughout the book all the topics are worked on in depth, recommendations and aspects to be taken into account to prevent all kinds of problems are explained.

Surely with BitLocker we have not gone beyond encrypting or decrypting computers, In fact, encrypting a computer with BitLocker is very easy but when we have a problem or one day an encrypted computer asks us for the recovery key, Many times we don't know where to start. BitLocker was born with Windows Vista but really began to be used in many companies from Windows 8 included in the Professional edition, This reason, among others, means that system administrators do not have much experience with this functionality.

Now after reading this book, We will have learned to know how to solve the different problems that can happen to us since we will have understood their causes, At the end of the road, the idea is that BitLocker is not a problem in our infrastructure.

I will explain the points that we will find in the book:

1. Encryption: Previous concepts

Here we have explained the essential concepts of encryption, Disk-level encryption VS file, How BitLocker Keys Work, etc.

2. BitLocker: Operating systems

BitLocker Supported Operating Systems: Versions and editions.

3. BitLocker: Partitions

Disk-level requirements

4. BitLocker: Service

The BitLocker Windows Service, When it stops, The type of startup you have configured, etc.

5 BitLocker: Basic Operations

A must-have long chapter for working with BitLocker: the different encryption modes, How to set them up, How to perform basic encryption operations, decipher, suspend, resume, Check Status, The Differences Between Encrypting a System Drive and a Data Drive, etc.. all explained from the graphical environment tool and from the command line with the command: manage-bde and from PowerShell.

6. BitLocker: Encryption Methods

Differences Between Different Types of Encryption and Which One to Choose.

7. BitLocker: Yield

Very interesting chapter dedicated to performance: After you encrypt your computers: Will they lose performance?? ¿How much? The answer is that it depends. Here are two scenarios with clear results.

8. BitLocker: Hardware encryption

Hardware encryption: Is it worth it? When is it being used?

9. Secure boot

Secure boot: ¿What is it? What does BitLocker have to do with BitLocker??. It also explains the differences between BIOSs (Legacy) and UEFI.

10. TPM

Here's everything we need to know about the TPM to use it with BitLocker: When it crashes, how to do a reset and also how to set it up on physical and virtual computers (VMware and Hyper-V).

11. BitLocker: Encrypt Used Space VS Encrypt Entire Drive

Differences between each option, How to set up.

12. BitLocker: System Check

What is BitLocker's system check?.

13. BitLocker: Recovery key

Very long and important chapter. Explains how to manage your recovery key, The different options where to save that password, in which cases it is requested.

18. Accessing an encrypted hard drive offline

How to access an encrypted disk offline from Windows and Linux.

19. BitLocker on a virtual disk (VHDX)

Encrypt a VHDX virtual disk: A very interesting option if what we want is to encrypt a part with data. Here's how to set it up.

20. BitLocker Repair Tool

Hopefully we will never have to use it. Here we have explained how this BitLocker encrypted disk data recovery tool works.

21. BitLocker: Automation

An essential chapter if we are going to encrypt computers en masse. Here we have an example of a script on how to do it and we can adapt it to our environment without problems.

22. BitLocker: Device encryption (Device Encryption)

Functionality that is enabled by default and if the equipment meets certain characteristics, BitLocker encryption is activated in the Windows installation itself.

23. Microsoft BitLocker Administration and Monitoring (MBAM)

Microsoft BitLocker Administration and Monitoring (MBAM): Tool to centrally manage BitLocker encryption only available with Microsoft contracts with "Software assurance". This chapter explains how the tool works and how to install it, which is not at all intuitive.
