Windows Server Book 2016 In Spanish

Very good to everyone! Today that we all know that it is the famous Black Friday, what less than to think about investing in training and acquiring a book with which both we and our technicians can learn easily and above all in a practical way. I wanted to introduce you to the new jewel of Xavier Genestós, his book WS2016LABS – Windows Server 2016!

It's been four years since the final version of Windows Server appeared 2012 and Xavier Genestós presented his book of laboratories on Windows Server 2012, WS2012LABS. Since then he has been publishing other books on Exchange, Active Directory, Group Policy, inter alia.

This time we have here another book so that system administrators and IT professionals can learn in a practical way with laboratories the new features that this version of the operating system incorporates: Windows Server Book 2016: WS2016LABS

If we review the main sections of the book's content, See:

  1. System

This section shows the differences and common functions between Windows Server 2016 and Windows 10 as well as Windows Server editions and licensing 2016.

Explains how to reduce the size of the operating system, define the order of the NICs, new security features such as Device guard and Credential guard, the administration of the antivirus that comes by default and tools to analyze the performance and mass deployments of configurations in a workgroup environment.

Nested virtualization is also explained in depth, which is already fully compatible with Windows Server 2016 and that thanks to this it is possible to use, for example, containers of “Hyper-V” on virtual machines as well as using the “Hyper-V” on virtual machines that run on top of other hypervisors such as VMware Workstation or VMware ESXi.

  1. PowerShell

On Windows Server 2016 we have the PowerShell version integrated 5.1 which in addition to bringing new cmd-lets, It has two very interesting features: OneGet and PowerShell Direct. With OneGet we can download and install programs from repositories from PowerShell, in the style of Linux repositories but with a different operating diagram. We can also download scripts with OneGet, Containers, etc...

We also have PowerShell Direct that allows us to establish a remote PowerShell session without having connectivity or configuring anything on the computer we want to connect to. The remote computer must be a “Hyper-V” or a container. The book explains how to set up remote PowerShell sessions with or without PowerShell Direct.

  1. NanoServer

If Windows Server 2008 ServerCore appears, on Windows Server 2016 NanoServer appears, Windows Server version “hyper-reduced”: Fewer restarts, Less disk space occupied, Fewer patches, Faster. We will not be able to select NanoServer in the Windows Server installation and we will have to generate an image file from PowerShell. This section of the book explains how to implement it, Your Administration, Advantages and disadvantages of your installation, as well as the limitations it has with respect to the ServerCore or ServerGUI version.

  1. Containers

Containers are one of the new features of Windows Server 2016. Containers will allow the administrator to deploy services quickly and using far fewer resources than using virtual machines in exchange for not having the same level of isolation that a virtual machine offers. In this section, we work on its installation, deployment, deployment and analyze when it is most convenient to deploy a container or a virtual machine. You can also see the differences between the two types of containers that are allowed in Windows Server: “Windows Server Container” and “Hyper-V Container”.

  1. Multipoint

On Windows Server 2016 the service is incorporated as a role “Multipoint” that allows us to share the screen on multiple terminals among other functions. Multipoint is designed for educational environments or training. In this section of the book, all its functionalities are explained in a practical way.

  1. DNS Server

In every active directory infrastructure we will find a DNS server, Essential for everything to work. The DNS server that integrates Windows Server has not undergone many changes over the years until the arrival of Windows Server 2016. One of the new features we find in the Windows Server DNS server 2016 are the DNS policies (DNS Policies). With DNS policies we can make our DNS server answer one answer or another depending on a series of conditions that we can establish. Three practical step-by-step scenarios are explained in the book.

  1. Ipam

Feature introduced in Windows Server 2012 designed to monitor the use of our network's IP addresses. The book explains how to get the service up and running and the new features found in Windows Server 2016.

  1. IIS 10

Section where we see explained the new features that the version incorporates 10 IIS and its full support for the HTTP/2 protocol. Thanks to the HTTP/2 protocol, we will be able to significantly increase the loading speed of the pages using HTTPs. All current browsers, they also support HTTP/2.

  1. Fileserver

In this block, We will find several functionalities explained:

  • New GPO to avoid problems with long paths in NTFS file systems.
  • Refs, New version and examples of “block cloning”, functionality that apps use, allows you to gain space and speed.
  • Deduplication: Improvements introduced in Windows Server 2016 and points to take into account to optimize its operation to the maximum.
  • Storage replica: New functionality in Windows Server 2016 that allows for block-level replication, In the book we will find a complete laboratory of server-to-server replication.
  • Storage Spaces: Storage spaces, allow the administrator to use Windows Server as if it were a disk array, Tiering is possible, Album waiting (hotspare), redundancy, and even flash the disks inside the virtual disk.

The book explains how to set up storage spaces step by step.

  • MSCS, Cluster in a Workgroup: With Windows Server 2016 it is possible to deploy a cluster without Active Directory and without cluster members being added to a domain. All that with this environment we will have a series of limitations and we will not have compatibility with some roles, Its implementation is possible.

  1. Active Directory

In addition to the new features that Windows Server incorporates 2016 such as the expiration of membership in a group, on Windows Server 2016 The functional level: Windows Server 2003 and the FRS-based replica of the SYSVOL are obsolete (deprecated). When Microsoft indicates that a feature is deprecated (deprecated), means that in the next version of Windows Server the functionality will no longer exist. It is for this reason that, in addition to retiring Windows Server-based domain controllers 2003 it is a good idea to make sure that the type of replica used in the SYSVOL is not FRS but DFS-R.

In the book we will find out how to find out if our domain controllers are using FRS or DFS-R replica and if so, FRS replica is being used, We will find the steps to carry out your migration. We will also find a step-by-step lab to perform a complete domain controller version migration with the detail of all the elements to be taken into account.
