Nagios – Monitoring our Business Service (3/3)
At last, Last document in this super interesting series! Where we can measure the SLA offered by our Business and the time it has been offering service, we will also see how to transfer this Business monitoring to interactive maps with NagVis; in addition to carrying out impact analysis on our Business, where we can analyze the critical points of our business!
Business Impact Analysis,
In this section we will be able to see the impact that any Service we have monitored will have on our business. If we have the Business Services well linked, we will be able to make simulations of what would happen if… As simple as to look for critical points in our organization or to be able to demonstrate to management the impact of not investing in something.
What happens if we remove a cable? What happens if a certificate expires? What happens if this switch falls off?? What happens if a WAN goes down? What happens if a DC falls? What happens if a disk fills up?
GOOD, If we access HTTP with a browser://DIRECCION_IP_NAGIOS/nagiosbp/cgi-bin/nagios-bp.cgi?&mode=bi we can start with the Business Impact Analysis. We will be able to decide how to start, what status the Services will have, if the actual and current status or put them all as OK. Click on “OK” Getting Started,
He will show us all the Business Services, Operational and Infrastructure Services, we will navigate with the trees to the Service we want to change state,
In this example, I get to a DNS server and I'm going to indicate that Windows DNS Services has it down, So click on the service to modify.
And we mark it with the state we want, for example CRITICAL which we assume indicates that the DNS service is down, “OK”,
And we will see how it affects globally, we can move at different heights to see how it impacts in this case. As we saw, we have 2 DNS servers, So no matter how much you go to hell, my company's Business service is not affected.
Maps with NagVis,
And to finish off the icing on the cake, nothing, Now let's make it pretty, we are going to draw some maps in NagVis to give visualization of the state of our business to other profiles in the organization. With some very simple drawings that we can make with Photoshop or similar, we can make our CEOs see the status of everything, We can make a map or drawing for each Business Service, for each Operational Service and for each Infrastructure Service, we can give them access via NagVis with a reader user who will access these maps and with links that we put on them travel from one map to another.
We have already seen in a Initial document how to install NagVis if you don't have it assembled and another where we explain how to use it. Therefore, With this last document you will see what wonders you can create! You see, with simple images that allow you to know the status of the Business Service and to be able to travel and move between maps, You see, both by adding objects of type Icon that monitor the SERVICE that is from the dummy host that we added at the beginning. We can also add shapes to be able to move between maps, they can be transparent but where we will click and it will take us to the corresponding map. That's how simple we would design the ones in our example.
And these would be the Operational Services of our Business Service Customer Service, where we see its dependencies and its state in a very clear way.
And nothing, It would be to draw as many maps as we are interested in to move around our organization, Know your status and demonstrate what and why it may affect our business service!
SLA – Service Level Agreement,
We can measure the service level agreement or SLA in a very simple way (Service Level Agreement or SLA) offered by each monitored Service, from Centreon > “Reporting” > “Dashboard” we will see the percentage of availability we have had both at the Business level and individually in each Operational Service, as in each Infrastructure Service. As we know, we can limit the period of time we want to consult and then export this data to present it at the Address or wherever!!!
