VMware Project: Onyx

Onyx is an app (beta) that will allow us to obtain PowerCLI code to be able to use it later; is presented as a proxy between the VMware vSphere Client and the vCenter Server, monitors traffic passing between the two and converts it into PowerShell code, being able only with the movement of the mouse, generate our own scripts with the intention of automating tasks or to know a function/command in a simple way…

The only requirement is to have the .NET Framework 3.5 installed on the computer, we took it down from the VMware LABs since it is a VMware project that has been open for quite some time. We simply unzip it and run it, we create a new connection against a vCenter, We mark the check “Launch a client after connected” and enter the credentials.

How we see, it will open the VMware client and connect us against the port (local) listening to the Onyx, we can connect to this computer directly also from a remote vSphere client; if we want to connect through PowerCLI we will do it by running: ‘ Connect VI Server IP_ONYX -protocol HTTP -port 1545 -User USER -Pass PASSWORD’

And that's it, once we press play it will start listening and any modifications we make through the vSphere client, Onyx will translate it into PowerShell commands that we can use when we 🙂 need it
