Configuring Symantec Backup Exec granular backup 12.5 on an Exchange Server 2007

Well, In this document we see a somewhat fussy topic that sometimes gets annoying, since you have to be careful with all the configuration steps so that it does not fail. In the document we will see how to configure our Symantec Backup Exec backup server 12.5 so you can back up every mailbox in our Microsoft Exchange organization at the email level 2007, in case of loss of mail, Be able to individually retrieve each email, or at a general level a mailbox or the entire private/public mail database.

The document is based on the article from the Symantec support website.

The first thing needed is a user with the necessary permissions to access all the resources of our Exchange organization 2007, We can copy the Administrator of our domain, or create a new user in the domain who is a member of the domain Admins group.

In this case, I will create a user whose password will not expire and who will not be able to change it, to make it a little more secure, my user to perform this type of backup will be called “GRTUser”.

Once the user is created, we meet more requirements, among them, install the Microsoft Exchange administration tools 2007 on the backup server (en el caso que no sean los mismos servidores) si nuestro servidor de backup es de 32bits, con bajar el CD de Exchange 2007 desde la web de Microsoft It will suffice, si es de 64bit’s tendremos el CD por ahí seguro 😉

More, necesitaremos instalar Microsoft Exchange Server MAPI Client and Collaboration Data Objects en el servidor Exchange.

> “Restart all services”.

A parte de todo esto, we need the user GRTUser to have a mailbox on our mail server, so we create it for them.

We will keep in mind in the user properties in the Exchange console, that the user will not be hidden from the address lists.

Once all the previous steps are completed, we must create a connection account in Backup Exec to be able to connect to the mail server with this user, for this, from Backup Exec: “Net” > “Connection Accounts…”

And we create a new account indicating its username, its account name and its password, without checking any boxes, We accept everything.

In “Tools” > “Options”, in the part of “Microsoft Exchange” we mark the check of “Backup Exec Granular Recovery Technology restores mailboxes, messages and public folders from backups in the Information Store. Accept.

List, now if we create a normal Backup Exec backup job and go to “Selections”, we must check the storage groups to back up, additionally we will select in “Resource Credentials” the user we have specified to perform GRT backups, and configure the rest of the backup job options that interest us.

Once we have made a backup, we can check if we create a restore job, how it would show us all the elements of our users' mailboxes, to be able to recover messages individually!!!
