Considerations to Consider When Virtualizing Citrix XenApp on VMware ESX

This document shows certain configurations that should be taken into account if we try to virtualize Citrix XenApp (o Citrix Presentation Server) at VMware ESX.

When installing VMware Tools do not check the 'Shared Folders' option’ o 'Shared folders', as it causes problems with Windows mobile profiles. If we needed to use it, We review this branch of the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlNetworkProviderOrder

We look for the key “ProviderOrder” and we modify it by removing the text “hgfs”.
http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/dynamickc.do?cmd=show&forward=nonthreadedKC&docType=kc&externalId=1317&sliceId=2&stateId=0%200%202860994

Since the hgfs.dat file is not deleted when you log out of “C:documents and settings%username%Program DataVMware” and we can have problems with mobile profiles.

And other common configurations with other VMs for better VM performance, how:

– Defragment virtual disks periodically (as well as a restart or restart of specific services).

– Disconnect the CD drive and unnecessary COM ports from the VM.

– Turn off the screen saver.

– In “Panel de Control” > “System” > “Advanced options” > “Yield” (Configuration) > In “Visual effects” Mark “Tune for best performance”.

– We will control the RAM so that it does not page.

– If we need high disk performance, we create several virtual disks on different LUN's. And giving you exclusive access to that LUN.

– Cleaning up unnecessary directives, temporary files or LOG's.

– Separate them into different resource pools or different vCPU core's.
