Upgrade VMware ESX Server 2.x or 3.x to VMware ESX Server 3.5
This document will show how to upgrade an outdated version of ESX to the recent version 3.5 of ESX, Any of these versions could be perfectly upgradeable: ESX 2.1, ESX 2.1.1, ESX 2.1.2, ESX 2.5, ESX 2.5.1, ESX 2.5.2, ESX 2.5.3, ESX 2.5.4, ESX 2.5.5, ESX 3.0, ESX 3.0.1 or ESX 3.02.
It is taken for granted that: VMs are not hosted on the ESX itself, And if they do, we must have a backup of them.
To update the server version, simply boot the host you have with an old version of ESX, from the CD and follow the simple wizard that will jump us. Press ENTER and continue with the wizard…
During the installation, the wizard will detect that we have an ESX already installed, It will give us the possibility to update the system to the version 3.5 keeping all the information we already have. Or directly crush what we have and make a clean/new installation. Mark “Upgrade” to update what we already have. “Next”,
Check the update summary and click on “Next” to update it.
… We wait for the minutes it takes for this update, that it will be more than if it were a new installation…
Once the installation is complete, We have nothing left but to restart the host, by clicking on “Finish”.
.Once the server is restarted, Check that you already indicate the version, one 3.5.0, And it would be as usual!!!
